What about flooding?

Dick Tracy Pos NpervilleWith so many people running for City Council, some important issues are going to get lost in the shuffle.  I understand it but don’t like it.  Especially discouraging is the lack of discussion about flooding.

This is really two problems: one is storm water flooding, when water floods your yard and then gets into your basement.  The great flood of 1996 left four feet of water in our family room.  Nothing says, “It’s gonna be a tough day” like seeing your sofa on top of your television. (Or, when Dick Tracy is knee deep in floodwater — great shot from Positively Naperville!)

But even worse is flooding from overflowing sanitary sewers.  Not to be too graphic–I just ate–but this is what happens when what went down toilets, tubs and sinks comes up in your basement.  It’s disgusting, and it happens too often in Naperville.  The reasons are complicated, and fixing it will be expensive, but as the City ages it is a challenge we must address.

When my family moved to Naperville 27 years ago we were surprised at how bad the electrical service was.  One friend says they didn’t bother to re-set their digital clocks because they figured the power would go out again pretty soon.  Today we have excellent, highly reliable electrical service.  We need to make our water and sewer service work just as well.  It’s certainly not a sexy topic, but it’s one I’ve been working on and hope to continue for the next four years.  Please help make this happen by voting to re-elect me to the City Council.
